Prime Time

I’ve bought myself a new toy over the weekend… a Nikkor 50mm f1.8D prime lens. It is a much faster lens (wider lens opening, thus allowing more light in) than the kit lens that came with my camera, a 18-105mm f3.5 – f5. This allows me to shoot in lower light and have more options to explore in terms of depth of field. I will however have to be a little more creative due to the fact that the lens has a fixed focal length (as opposed to a zoom lens).

I have not had much time to play around with it yet, but I took it for a bit of a spin this morning with a very keen model… our African Grey parrot, Bono. He was quite  intrigued by all the morning activity outside the window.

It´s great to see how the lens, by blurring the background behind Bono’s head brings the action of his looking into live, because it’s eye is in sharp focus. As you might know already it can zoom as much as you can zoom. Good choice for a terrific sharp and fast lens.
