Katie Melua wrote a love song about all the bicycles in Beijing. She might just as well have used Netherlands for her song because almost every streetlamp or railing in its cities has a bicycle tied to it. The following posts will feature a few shots from a mini project where I documented bicycles and cycling in the Netherlands.

Huis De Voorst, a country house near Zutphen, was built by one of my ancestors – Arnold Joost van Keppel – in the 17th century. I tried to put in a land claim on the property, but unfortunately it was turned down!
Walking around in Utrecht, we suddenly found ourselves in the middle of the 1950’s, on the scene for a new movie. A Volvo PV544 stands in the foreground.

We’ve just returned from a two week trip to the Netherlands and Germany with plenty of photos and even more memories!
Utrecht is a city rich in culture and history. The dramatic Dom Tower dominates the skyline as it keeps watch over the vibrant city center. Originally part of the Dom Church, it is now stands alone after the nave collapsed in the 17th century.
Thanks to my wife’s Dutch heritage, we were invited to attend the “Koninginnedag” (Queen’s Day) celebrations at the Dutch Embassy in Pretoria. The traditional food and drinks were great, but it was the interesting characters that made this a memorable party!
